Staging the concert: Berio Sequenza

With Staging the Concert BOZAR introduces a new format in which visual art and music enter into dialogue. New dimensions of the concert experience are explored through the play with space, light and materials.

Between 1958 and 2002, Italian composer Luciano Berio composed fourteen groundbreaking Sequenze for solo instruments, in which he radically pushed the boundaries of virtuosity and expression. In each Sequenza, Berio develops a complex musical idea beyond mere technical mastery. Alexander Vantournhout selected five of them - for violin, voice, trombone, accordion and harp - and together with four performers from Not Standing creates a performance that explores the physical possibilities of Berio's music. During a unique tour of the Palace, a fascinating dialogue emerges between Horta's iconic architecture, the musicians and the performers' acrobatic movements. Music, space and movement merge seamlessly.

“‘Staging the concert: Sequenze’ is an extravagantly beautiful demonstration of the visual richness that bodies can produce with music and architecture as sparring partners.” - Pzazz
